Tentative Agreement Not Ratified. What’s Next?

Tuesday, July 29th, United Flight Attendants voted against the ratification of the Tentative Agreement. Following the direction of the Members, the United MEC has started to discuss our plan before returning to the negotiations table with United management and the support of the National Mediation Board (NMB) appointed Mediator.

The will of the Members is the core of our Negotiations and the foundation for the future of our profession. We acknowledge that in our industry, especially during Contract negotiations, there are always areas needing improvement. The gains we fought for in this Tentative Agreement did not meet expectations, and we acknowledge that we must reassess and continue fighting for more. This is about finding solutions, understanding what went wrong, and how we, as leadership, can strengthen our support to achieve an agreement based on Flight Attendant priorities.

Now is the time to take a deep dive into the concerns you have raised and listen carefully to the voices of all our flying partners. Your experiences, opinions, and needs are at the forefront of this process and the only way we can build a clear path forward before returning to the table. Since our first comprehensive survey in 2020, our work group has significantly grown. Roughly thirty-two percent of our current members were unable to participate in the initial roadshows or have their opinions weighed during the crafting of our original proposals.

We recognize the truth in the frustration from Members. The results of the failed Tentative Agreement serve as a pivotal moment for us to recommit our efforts in making sure every voice is heard moving forward in this negotiation process.

The United MEC is in the process of developing a plan to resurvey the members. Our goal is to conduct an online survey that is efficient, effective, and accurate. While we aim to roll this out in a timely manner, we must ensure that the survey is secure and each step is thoroughly executed. Maintaining the integrity of the survey is essential as the results will reflect your priorities, form new proposals, and guide us in the next round of bargaining.

Our power is measured by the strength of our Solidarity. Together, we will forge forward. We will continue fighting for what we have earned, the respect for our profession that only an industry-leading Contract can provide.

Make sure your voice is part of the continuing conversation. Further details and timelines will be shared soon. Sign up for Negotiations Updates, attend your Local Council Meetings, and consider becoming a local volunteer to support our next steps towards a TA2.
